Fire dampers are a means of fire protection used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems which act to prevent the spread of fire through ducting. Where temperatures rise the fire damper closes to limit the spread of fire. Typically these are operated by having a component which melts when a certain temperature is reached, allowing the damper to close. Some types may also be operated electronically.
The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) have become aware of a significant number of dampers having been incorrectly installed and screws having been used to secure the damper which do not melt at the appropriate temperature, meaning the damper would fail to operate in the event of a fire.
BESA have issued a warning about the correct installation of fire dampers.
BESA have also updated their technical bulletin ‘VH001 Fire and Smoke Damper Maintenance V3’ giving further clarification in the areas of installation/access panels, spring operated fusible link dampers, fire stopping and penetration seals, testing/restricted access, evidence gathering, examples of closed and opened dampers and more links to additional guidance.
