On April 11, the Department for Transport launched a consultation regarding potential amendments to restrictions applying to driving licences for heavy goods vehicles, buses, and coaches.
The core proposals suggested within the consultation include:
- Removing the 50km route limit currently in place for bus and coach drivers aged 18 to 20 when driving a regular service.
- Allowing a person to take the theory and off-road manoeuvres test required to gain their driver certificate of professional competence (DCPC) before being granted a provisional bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle driver entitlement.
These proposals are part of an ongoing effort by the Department of Transport to reduce the shortage of drivers for heavy goods vehicles, buses, and coaches.
The consultation runs until June 5, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
