A new, free-to-view standard detailing recommendation for designing safe and accessible charging sites for electric heavy goods vehicles has been published by the British Standards Institution.

The standard, named BSI Flex 2071—Publicly Accessible Charging Sites for Battery Electric HGVs, is aimed at providing those setting up and managing charging sites with safety and security information for the design and layout of sites.

This includes details on:

  • Managing public access to sites
  • Access to the site by specific vehicle types
  • The safety of drivers and pedestrians
  • Electrical safety
  • Fire safety
  • Driver, other road users, and pedestrian safety
  • Welfare facilities
  • The use of canopies for charging points
  • HGVs with ancillary power needs
  • Site security

Alongside the details and recommendations about how to set up safe and accessible charging sites, there are a series of diagrams showing different layouts for sites best suited for different vehicles and situations.
