In recent years there has been an increase in interest in the remote operation of vehicles, whether this is in the air, at sea or on land.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) recently launched a new technical standard on managing human factors in the remote operation of vehicles. The standard, BSI Flex 1887, is sponsored by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles and provides guidance on the human factors associated with the development of systems for self-driving vehicles. In particular looking at the remote operation of vehicles on roads.
This includes information on:
- Selecting, training, and assessing the competence of remote operators.
- Understanding remote operations organisation responsibilities, including risk and incident management.
- Creating role-specific remote operator workstations and human-autonomy teaming.
