The latest statistics from the HSE show that falls from height accounted for 50 work-related fatalities in the year to March 2024 and approximately 8% of all work-related non-fatal injuries annually.

Following on from the initial No Falls Week in 2024, the No Falls Foundation has announced that a second No Falls Week campaign will take place in 2025 running from May 12th to May 16th.

The objective of No Falls Week is to raise awareness about the importance of safe working at height.

It is important to remember that working at height can include situations where you can fall from ground level, for example, into a hole in the ground or an opening in the floor.

All work at height should be planned; before undertaking a task, consider:

  • Will weather conditions compromise worker safety?
  • Is the place where the work at height will be undertaken safe?
  • Can you stop materials or objects falling, for example, by using mesh on scaffolding?
  • Can you prevent people from being hit if materials or objects do fall, for example, by using exclusion zones to keep people away?
  • Can you store materials and objects safely, so they won’t cause injury if they are disturbed or collapse?
  • What can you implement for emergencies and rescue, for example, a set procedure for evacuation?

Where practical, you should aim to do as much work as possible from the ground to avoid the need to work at height in the first place. One example could involve using extendable tools to avoid the need to use a ladder.
