The department for Transport has announced that it will soon be made illegal to fit tyres aged 10 years or older to the front wheels of lorries, buses and coaches and to any wheels of minibuses.

Legislation is expected in the autumn. Legislation will also make it mandatory for tyres to show a clearly visible date of manufacture, this will also apply to re-treaded tyres, with the date of re-treading to be displayed. The full announcement can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-bans-old-coach-bus-and-lorry-tyres-from-roads-in-new-measures-to-improve-road-safety

This will be enforced through MOT testing and roadside inspection activities.

This action follows on from the Road Safety Statement and supporting action plan launched last year, which can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/road-safety-statement-2019-a-lifetime-of-road-safety
